Leilehua Yuen's Art of Hawai`i
Order Form

In addition to the performing arts, the people of ancient Hawai`i had a highly developed tradition of fine arts utilizing native materials such as wood, stone, feathers, bone, shell, coral, and plant fibres. Hawai`i Island artist Leilehua Yuen has spent almost three decades studying the many arts of these islands. Here, she shares some of her work.

The "gourd" rattles of Hawai`i were often made of coconut as well. This one is crafted using only materials and techniques available before 1778. Private collection.

Kahili

Kahili are a part of formal court regalia. Sizes range from the small hand kahili carried by noblewomen to the huge formal kahili used as family standards.
Leilehua Yuen shows two kahili from the collection of seven which she crafted for the Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
